Ashiko Drum Club

Working with several Arts for Living members, their fathers and numerous community members, the Ashiko Drum Club has hand-built nine African-style Ashiko Drums since October 2012.
Learning new skills, using tools involving gross and fine motor skill development, following instructions, enhancing creativity and working together the group created these high quality drums to play in thythm circles adn to auction at local fundraiser to aid in continuing the drum building group.

Made from 16 staves of Poplar or Douglas Fir Wood, the members glued the staves together to form a cylinder, planed the wood and sanded each piece until smooth. Rope must be securely tied in specific patterns around the metal rings holding the goat hide drum head in place. Since completion, these drums have been played with joy in numerous venues by the members (Jake, Josh & Drew) and throughout California to five different supporters who have purchased a drum.

Please contact us if you would like additional information, would like to host a workshop to create your own drum, have supplies to donate or would like to volunteer your skills.
